How is it that some people are able to get up at 6am, go for a jog, read a book for thirty minutes, do some morning meditation, take a cold shower and whip up a healthy breakfast, all before you’ve even wake up?

Why are some better than others at focusing on the goals they set for themselves?

What causes the raw determination that is seen in the most successful of entrepreneurs? Where does this motivation come from? The motivation to keep learning, trying new things, and moving forward, failure after failure, with unwavering enthusiasm.

How to be productive, stay on track with accomplish goals you set yourself

We’ve all heard countless times how important it is to set goals, and yet despite this we often end up not achieving these limits we set for ourselves. Why? Because to stay on track, stay focused and get shit done, you need to be smart about your goals. Not smart but SMART. The things you want to achieve need to be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and within a certain time frame.

When it comes to achieving the goals you set for yourself, there are some handy tricks to help you along the way.


Visualising success is a tactic that has been used in business for years. There are lots of articles on it and they all say the same thing...

Envision your goal. Picture yourself actually achieving the target that you have set for yourself. Picture success.

Do you want to get 1000 people on your mailing list? How does it feel having accomplished this task? Don’t just think about it for a second. Really imagine it. How does it make you feel? Are you glad you put in all that effort? What do your friends and family think – are they proud of you?

Visualising your goals helps you to believe that you will actually achieve them. It is possible. This positive reinforcement acts as a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy.

If you envision your dreams becoming a reality, you create mental pictures in your mind that affect your self-image, and by extension the way you feel, act and achieve.

One way to visualise yourself achieving your goals is to write them down on post-it notes and stick them around the house in places where you will see them. These positive reminders can be placed on your bathroom mirror, above your bed, in the kitchen... or anywhere else you will see them.

Write things like... “I can do this”, “I will smash my goal” and “It won’t be long before I …”

Repetition of positive affirmations or mantras, either verbal or written, help us to believe that we can reach our goal, and then in turn this positive mental attitude helps us to actually accomplish our goals.

Positive Pressure

Tell people about your goal. It can be anyone... a close friend, a family member, an acquaintance or a coworker. You may feel embarrassed when you haven't achieved your goal, but this positive pressure you inflict upon yourself will help you to stay focused.

Let's say your goal is to create a new website for your online business. Whenever people ask you how your goal is going, it's not only pressurising but it also acts as a reminder to start working towards your goal again.

Write 'em down

If you don’t set a deadline for a goal, then it isn’t really a goal! Most people know this, but in addition to this, you need to write your goals down. It makes them more real.

Get a dream book with different sections. You can separate your goals in your dream book by category. For example, I have separate sections for networking and collaborations, content creation, followers on social, and signups. But obviously, you do you.

You can have goals relating to anything.. your online business, your fitness regime, a freelancing business... or anything in your personal life.

Make it a habit

It takes 21 days to make or break a habit. Set a goal period of 21 days and work on your goal each day. Working on your goal at the same time every day means it becomes a part of your routine and will keep you focused on achieving this goal.

Just like brushing your teeth when you wake up or watching the news before you go to sleep, you can incorporate anything into your daily routine.

Enjoy yourself while pursuing your goals

If you’re not enjoying yourself while you are working on your goals, then why are you doing it? The enjoyment will come from the sense of achievement you feel along the way. It’s important to set milestones at regular intervals. This is what makes your goal realistic and will help you stick to a long-term goal, which may take months or even years to achieve.

Just say your goal is to have 500 new website visitors, you can break this down into smaller more achievable chunks. Make sure to celebrate when you reach these milestones. Often we are too hard on ourselves and forget to be proud of what we have already accomplished.

Setting clearly defined SMART goals and then achieving them is the key to efficiently running an online business.

Why are you setting yourself this target? Are you passionate about what you do?

If you’re not, you will find it hard to stay focused, to incorporate your goals into your every day routine and to constantly work towards reaching the targets you set for yourself.

No one else can force you, motivate you or inspire you to do something if you don’t have some inner passion or reason for doing what you are doing.

If at any stage throughout the process you feel like giving up, think about why you started. Lots of people quit because they see how far they have left to go, they don't see how far they’ve already come.
