We've been chatting to the lovely ladies that are part of our Facebook Community and one question we hear all the time is "How do I get started with finding work online?"

Well of course… we wanted to help!

We put together a short guide on how to find remote jobs called "Digital Nomad: A 3 Step Guide to Becoming Location Independent". You can grab your free copy at the end of this page, so feel free to skip right down there and grab it while you still can.

BUT… you might be feeling a bit skeptical. Our Co-Founder Roz wanted to share how she put it all into practice. Read it below.

Location Independent Lifestyle - Myanmar, Burma

It can work for you too. I promise.

I firmly believe that in order to find the job of your dreams you need to take a step back and figure out what type of life you really want. What is going to make you jump out of bed in the morning? What's going to fulfil you so much that you'll happily work past midnight to meet deadlines?

There is no magic one size fits all formula.

I want to share a bit about where it all began for me.

When I started out I knew:

  • I wanted a job where I could travel the world
  • I wanted to be my own boss
  • I wanted to help others and give back to society
  • I wanted to work from my laptop
  • I wanted to put my business degree to good use
  • I wanted to do something that fulfilled me every day and made me excited to get out of bed
  • I wanted enough money to live comfortably

Once I had figured all of this out. I took steps to make this happen.

I knew that my dream job wasn't just going to come to me. So, I went to it.

I knew that my dream job wasn't just going to come to me. So, I went to it. I moved to Vietnam with my friend Laura and started teaching English. It wasn't exactly what I wanted to do but it was a step in the right direction for me. While I was there I picked up my first remote job working as a virtual assistant and online marketer for a volunteering organisation.

Teaching English In Vietnam

At this stage I was doing pretty well off my list…

I was travelling, working from my laptop (at least part time) and I was working for an organisation that satisfied my desire to "give back". I'd achieved all of this in a few short months and I was pretty damn pleased with myself. I was also spending a lot of time upskilling from my laptop. As my background from university is in business and marketing, I devoted hours every week learning everything I could about digital marketing. This not only helped me with my job at the time but has been invaluable since starting My Travel Tribe.

Upskilling for a Location Independent Lifestyle

When my teaching contract finished. I moved to Bali with Laura. We've been best friends since our first year in university and we'd been travelling together for 5 months at that stage. I saw an ad for Start Up Weekend Bali when we were still in Vietnam and as it was scheduled for the middle of our trip, it seemed like fate.

I had a bunch of ideas floating around in my head at the time. Everything was travel related and after successfully co-living a number of times I had a special interest in projects based around community living.

I'm going to cut a long story short here. I pitched an idea at Start Up Weekend. My idea went through to the next stage, which meant I got to spend the weekend working on it with an awesome team of people. When it was all over, Laura and I decided to continue working on that idea together.

And...

That idea is now My Travel Tribe!

The decision to work on MTT ticked nearly every box on my list.

What's missing you might ask?

Well, start ups don't really make enough money to live "comfortably" right away. BUT… I wake up every day excited to work on the job of my dreams.
